[Fragments by Kazuko Tsurumi and Senrei Nishikawa]
千麗舞の夕 ー鶴見和子先生へー
[Announcement]
One year has passed since my ‘mentor,’ Kazuko Tsurumi has gone.
The essence of her words come to my heart more and more,
each by each about the society, the Japanese Buyo Dance and we the humans.
On the anniversary, I would like to dedicate my dance to her spirit: ‘Shizu no Odamaki’’
is the first piece. This is well-known that was danced by the historical lady shirabyoshi
(traveling dancer who lived around Ⅻ-]W 12~14 century),
Shizuka (who dedicated the dance for the sake of her beloved Minamoto no Yoshitsune
on the request of his enemy brother samurai, Minamoto no Yoritomo in]V13 century)
and late Kazuko Tsurumi performed just before she was attacked by the cerebral apoplexy
which made her paralyzed in the left side of the body. Another piece is ‘Suiten’
which theme is taken from the life of Minakata Kumagusu, a giant scholar especially on Slime molds
who lived 1867-1941, about whose biographical book I was presented by Kazuko Tsurumi in 1994.
This time the great maestro of Japanese flute, Tosha Meisho composed and he will be performing on the stage.
I would greatly appreciate if you could join the dancing evening together with me.

…. On June 23, 1991, I danced ‘Shizu no Odamaki’
at the National Small Theatre in Tokyo organized by the late 2nd Tokutaro Hanayagi.
I was attacked by cerebral hemorrhage 4 years and 6 months after,
which resulted in making the stage last one in my life…
My thoughts on Shizuka is becoming more stronger and deeper.
There is a special reason why for my feeling on her.
It is because I recon her as the first example of non-violence in Japan.
---- ‘My Will’ published from Fujiwara Publishing Co.
…. I remembered the feeling when my mentor Kazuko Tsurumi kindly sent me a copy of an article in the newspaper,
Kyoto Shinbun that included the above text: I also used to like the performance
‘Shizu no Odamaki’ and dance it so many times.
I wondered then that it might have been a feeling of resistance toward the established world as well as of
unsatisfaction toward myself of the time that inspired me to dance the piece.
It has been long time to perform this piece since my stage
at the Kyoto Prefecture Center for Arts and Culture on February 10, 1979.
---- Shizuya shizu, shizu no odamaki, kurikaeshi
mukashi wo ima ni nasuyoshimogana….
---- Song by Shizuka
Shizuka was confined by Minamoto no Yoritomo,
the eldest brother to her beloved Minamoto no Yoshitsune as they became enemies,
which tragedy has become a well-known story historically in Japan.
Thier first and only son whom Shizuka bored during her confined time was immediately
killed by Minamoto no Yoritomo. And she was ordered to dedicate a performance on
a ceremonial occasion by Minamoto no Yoritomo for her elegant dance of established reputation.
Surprisingly, she performed her dance in the enemy’s eye which longed her beloved Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
It was her extraordinary courage committing the possibility to be killed
that made her dedicate her dance praising and longing for her beloved Yoshitsune then.
As a someone who was deprived almost everything, she still took the courage
to show her resistance to the situation with non-violent style, which touched even the enemy,
and was given an admiring word especially by the wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, Masako.
Later, Shizuka was forgiven and relieved to go back her home in Kyoto,
where it is said that she passed away at the age of 19 after her beloved
Yoshitsune committed suicide compelled by his brother…

---- On November 21, 1994, a package of books,‘Minakata Kumagusu’ (Kodansha Publishing Co.)
and ‘Mandala Discussion on Minakata’ (Yasaka Shobo Publishing Co.) was delivered at my place.
It was from my mentor, Kazuko Tsurumi.
I thought it too difficult for me at that time.
Now, I am reading these books inspired to dance dedicating performance to her and I
find myself understanding what’s written in them very well as if she were reading them out for me….
---- Staying outside of any kinds of established, refusing to be controlled,
Minakata Kumagusu lived his unique life as scholar,
establishing a very unique research area of Slime molds.
---- Kumagusu who dedicated his whole life to research a kind of germ
that is called Slime molds and was seeing the ‘universe’ in the smallest
living system of the germ. He also compared the mandala world of secret sect
of eastern Buddhism with the western modern science seeking a means to describe
the dynamically alive reality.
…. And, my mentor Tsurumi Kazuko seeked his world whose life also
symbolizes the non-violent resistance to the established power.
---- The vast attractive world of Kumagusu that seems to go far beyond the general understanding,
and my current situation of time limit toward the performance day:
the comparison itself seems to be telling me a symbolic message of Kumagusu himself
as well as of my mentor Tsurumi Kazuko…*
